I was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England on Sept 22nd, 1901. My father w
employed in the Registrars Office of the Hull and Barnsley Railway and shortly
after my birth moved to a small village called North Cave, some 16 miles from
Hull.
I had two brothers, Bob, the eldest and Deans 15 months older than myself. My earliest recollection of school was when I entered primary school at North
Cave at the age of five.
There were two public schools in North Cave, one for girls and one for boys,
both operated by the Church of England.
The primary school was adjacent to the girls school situated at the West End of
the village while the boys school was at the extreme east end." "My brother Deans and I left this school when
I was 12 and he was 13 and we enrolled in Eton House School, Hull, a private boys school which my father had
attended.
We travelled to Hull by train each day, leaving North Cave at 8:09 am. and returning at 5:15pm."
"As my father had arranged for me to be articled with the firm of Easton and
Sons, (Chartered Accountants) I took a further course from Hymers College,
Hull, in business administration, shorthand,bookkeeping, etc. to be followed by
a preliminary Chartered Accountants examination.
Unfortunately at age 17 my health was not good and the doctor's advice was that
I should try working ouside in the fresh air. After staying at home for a few
months I eventually went to Red House Farm and worked as a student farmer with
Mr. Herbert Voaseand. I stayed with him until I decided to come to Canada. Deans was meanwhile serving his
apprenticeship in marine engineering in
Sunderland and was boarding with people called Cooper."
